NEWBERRY, Fla. (WCJB) -Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies and Barry Heckard, 39, engaged in an armed standoff on Newberry Road Thursday night in the city of Newberry; that standoff ended with Heckard’s death.

This happened near the intersection of Southwest 15th Avenue and Highway 27, just south of Heckard’s business, Heckard’s Doors. A witness took video of the incident.

Deputies say they initially saw a vehicle swerving on SR-45 around 8:30 p.m., and attempted to pull the driver over for a suspected DUI.

The suspect, Barry Heckard, sped away and officers then tried conducting a pit maneuver. That’s when they say he shot at deputies. At least one deputy fired back at the driver.

According to ASO no deputies are injured, but Heckard is dead.

A large portion of Newberry Rd. was shut down for to the investigation.

Deputies also said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is coming from Jacksonville, and will be helping with the investigation.

This is a developing story and will be updated and more information becomes available.
