Construction starts on a one million-plus sq. ft. warehouse in Ocala
OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - Last Wednesday, Red Rock Development the same company that built the Amazon facility broke ground on a warehouse that is more than a million sq. ft.
The warehouse is being built on the 3100 block of NW 44th Ave. in Ocala.
The president of the company said they searched all over Florida, but chose Ocala because of the land.
“The reality is that there were not a lot of choices there’s a lot of land in Florida, but not a land that’s suitable because of water and wet and environmental impacts, or zoning,” said John Barker Jr.
Along with Red Rock Development, four or five other companies have started building spec spaces.
Which are buildings that do not yet have tenants.
Kevin Sheilley the president of the Ocala CEP said this will create tons of jobs.
“Compared to the Ocala, Marion County commerce park where Amazon, Fedex and Autozone is. That’s 2 1/2 times that space, so we’re adding 2 1/2 times that. There are 3,000 jobs there, so it’s not far fetch to think that over the next couple of years we could see an additional 6 to 8,000 jobs.”
Barker Jr. agreed that Ocala is the place to be.
“Communities can’t turn on a dime, if a community is watching this and they go we want to be Ocala it takes years. That’s a plus plus because for the neighboring county to catch up will take 7 or 8 years and that’s what’s in the making here,” said Barker Jr.
But just like the Amazon building, they are waiting for a company to fill the space.
